The Butterfly Club
The start of our out of school Activity Clubs - The Butterfly Club - was set up at the beginning of January 1999. It was an idea a parent had that would give the children a fun club after school and encourage parental involvement. The idea is that children learn by having fun, also parents would see how they can help their child. By falling in line with both the literacy and numeracy strategy, the club uses four corners of a room. Each corner holds a different activity, including reading, writing making and games. Four activities all giving children fun tasks to do. The club survived on donations and voluntary help.
In the Making Corner children were encouraged to make items by following written instructions, such as the Welephant Fire Engine, shown opposite and kindly donated by Wigan Fire Brigade. the Reading Corner contained books, comics, children's magazines and wordsearches. Wigan Library kindly supplied 68 new books on long term loan. The Writing Corner hosted a pen pal scheme, using the school black bag system. The Wigan Observer also donated news photographs for the children to write about.he Games Corner uses various board games where the children had to read instructions.
At the end of each meeting the children relaxed by colouring and cutting out pictures. They were given folders containing the work they completed and also information leaflets. The Butterfly Club could not have functioned without the kind help of our volunteers and local organisations.
